Epstein, who's 6-feet-2 and 185
pounds, is a strong all-around athlete
who also plays for Torrey Pines' varsity
basketball team. "He's very, very com-
petitive," Burke said. "It seemed that
whenever he didn't kick it into the end
zone he'd always make the tackle. We
accused him of kicking it short on
purpose because he wanted to make
the tackle. It's part of that competitive
fire of his."
After narrowing his college choices
to U-M, UCLA and Colorado,
Epstein chose U-M after visiting Ann
Arbor last November. "It was where I
felt most comfortable," Epstein said.
"I liked the way the players interacted
with each other and the way the
coaches interacted with each other.
And the academics are great, too."

Epstein kicked a
58-yarder.

Epstein knows there's no guarantee
that he'll play as a true freshman, but
says, "I'm hoping." Epstein will com-
pete with last year's placekickers, Kraig
Baker and Jay Feely, and the returning
punter, Jason Vinson — all of whom
will be seniors next season.
"I'm just going to go into (pre-sea-
son) camp and just work hard and try
to earn a spot wherever I can," Epstein
says.
Off the field, one of Hayden's most
memorable accomplishments also
involved his mother.
"My mom did her dissertation on
the Holocaust," Epstein explained,
"because my grandparents, all of
them, were in the Holocaust. I helped
her do research. It was an experience,
hearing how they (his grandparents)
got treated and what they had to go
through (in the concentration camps)
and how my grandma escaped."
Once again, mom teaches an
important lesson. ❑
