emember kids, if you want
to become a star athlete,
you've got to listen to your
mom.
Just ask Hayden Epstein.
Four years ago, as a San Diego
Torrey Pines High School freshman,
Epstein joined the football team as a
kicker because "it was the only posi-
tion my mom would let me play."
Today, Epstein is a Parade magazine
All-American. He was recruited by 40
major colleges and chose the
University of Michigan, where he
could take over the punting and place-
kicking duties for the defending
national champions next fall.
Having heeded his mother Judy's
instructions four years ago, Epstein
then learned placekicking technique
from his father, Paul, a former high
school soccer player.
In two seasons of varsity football,
Epstein connected on 18 of 27 field
goal tries, including a 58-yarder last
season — the longest in the history of
Qualcomm Stadium (formerly Jack
Murphy Stadium), home to the San
Diego Chargers of the NFL and two
Super Bowls. He also connected on
field goals from 51, 55 and 56 yards
last year and punted for a 4-yard
average. But his stats don't tell the
whole story.
