The Klezmer Fusion Band
FUNKY FUSION
You've got to change your evil ways,
Haman.
Before we start hangin' you.
You've got to change, Haman.
And every word that I say is true.
Familiar Santana tune. But what
about those lyrics? "Evil Ways" works
perfectly as a parody denouncing the
Purim antagonist, so the Klezmer
Fusion Band cleverly worked the
words into its first CD, Klezmer Fusion
Band: Jewish Celebratory Music.
Led by Ann Arbor musician Neil
Alexander, the band's music is derived
from three traditional sources:
Yiddish/klezmer (including folk and
theater music), Israeli/Hebrew (includ-
ing contemporary, folk and dance
tunes) and religious.
Traditional ethnic instruments give
the music an Old World feel. But
those instruments "fuse" with a jazz
rhythm section to enliven the tunes
and imbue them with a contempo-
rary sound. It's toe-tapping music
with a jazz, Latin and rock beat —
satirical lyrics with a positive Jewish
spin.
The CD recording includes such
standards as "Russische Sher" and a
jazz rendition of "Bei Mir Bistu
Sheyn," as well as a Yiddish folk lulla-
by and traditional liturgical prayers.
Then there are the parodies of famous
rock tunes, like "Under the Chuppah"
(to the tune of "Under the
Boardwalk") and "Lu Y'hee ("Let It
Be"), performed as a ballad.
The release of the CD coincides
with the Washtenaw County JCC's
Night of Klezmer, a Purim party on
Saturday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the

From his home in Jerusalem, noted
photographer Neil Folberg travels the
countryside capturing on film the
magnificence of Israel's uninhabited
wilderness. A former student and col-
league of Ansel Adams, Folberg's
renowned landscapes led to his most
recent commission — the dramatic
photographic exhibition "And I Shall
Dwell Among Them: Historic
Synagogues of the World."

wherever they wandered in the great
Diaspora, the tradition of building
synagogues continued — not only as a
refuge for their beliefs but as a testa-

Folberg's exhibit of spiritual, archi-
tectural and cultural images opens at
Spertus Museum in Chicago on

Criss-crossing the globe, from India

Folberg photographed palatial and
