"I create something that is visually
stimulating in ways that are much
more complex than just showing a
picture," he said.
A member of Temple Emanu-El,
Abt graduated from Drake University
with a bachelor's degree in fine arts
but spent a year in Israel studying for
the Reform rabbinate.
Deciding that he was more suited
to an artistic profession, he returned
to Drake, where he earned a master's
degree in fine arts.
His career path included work as
a curator of collections at the
Wichita Art Museum, exhibition
coordinator of the Rare Books
Department at the University of
Chicago and acting director of the
Smart Museum of Art at the
University of Chicago.
Since 1989, he has worked at
Wayne, where he teaches drawing and
conducts senior seminars.
Drawings to illustrate the poem
"Water-Sheba's Story" by Alice
Ryerson Hayes also are being shown at
the Cary Gallery.

Washington and Jefferson College and
the Wichita Art Museum.
"In my paintings and drawings,
there are very subtle references to cer-
tain visual images or ideas that have
come out of Jewish history and theol-
ogy," Abt said. "I'm an armchair
enthusiast in the study of the history
of Jewish mysticism and literature. I've
followed scholarship in that area."
Abt, who is married to musicologist
Mary Paquette-Abt and has two chil-
dren, is working on a book that covers
the history of the Detroit Institute of
Arts.
He also is involved with the pro-
jected move of the Detroit Artists
Market to Detroit's cultural center as
the organization plans to bring in con-
temporary art from around the coun-
try and organize shows around the
country to feature the work of
Michigan artists.
The National Advisory Board for
the Ragdale Foundation, an artists'
colony in Lake Forest, Ill., where
artists and writers work, is another
commitment.

Abt at the easel: "It's interestin to me that people will often talk about art that
is realistic as lacking creative freedom when I think just the opposite is true."

"I haven't done poetry illustration
before," Abt said. "The whole idea
came after a solo show I had done in
Chicago. It included paintings that
were based on the time I spent in
Israel.
"The poet had come to ,the show
and seen these paintings, which
reminded her of her own travels in the
area, and she asked if I would collabo-
rate with her."
Abt's works can be seen in the col-
lections of the Des Moines Art Center,
the Minnesota Museum of Art,

"I'm also chair of the editorial
board of the Wayne State University
Press," Abt said. "It publishes top
series of books in Judaic studies, and
we're very proud of it. Like many areas
of scholarly publishing, it is in need of
more community support." ❑

Jeffrey Abt's paintings and drawings
will be shown March 7-April 4 at
the Cary Gallery, 226 Walnut Blvd.,
Rochester. An artist's reception is
planned from 6-8 p.m. Saturday,
March 7. (248) 651- 4656.
