liberators is only available through
books, videos, memorials and muse-
ums. As the Holocaust recedes into
history, they hope to distort the popu-
lar understanding of the Holocaust to
promote anti-Semitism and rehabili-
tate National Socialism and Nazi Ger-
many.
What can we do about it? We must
continue to keep the memory alive by
organizing and supporting programs
and organizations that provide quality
Holocaust education. We must teach
the universal lessons of the Holocaust
while insisting on the uniqueness of the
tragedy. And just reading this brief col-
umn helped, since we must remain vig-
ilant to the deniers' efforts, and counter
and expose them and their agenda at
every turn. ❑

spiritually, financially and activity-
wise."
Reflecting on the past 100 years,
Maddin says: "When we look back at
what Jews individually and collectively
have accomplished and contributed,
there's much to be proud of. For exam-
ple, many Detroiters were instrumental
in Israel's founding. We have a lot to
talk about. Our story is exciting. The
next 100 years can be more meaning-
ful to young people if they know
where we've been."
Even if he hooks only 1,000 under-
involved or uninvolved Jews via the
centennial celebration, Maddin will
have succeeded. Drawing Jews to their
faith is what's important — not arbi-
trary numbers.
Remember: We're a people. As Pirke
Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) tells us:
Uch'she-a-ni l'atzn2i ma-a-ni. "If I am
only for myself, what am I?" ❑
