paintings are on display throughout
the building — and all of them were
donated by the artist, who is a personal
friend of Temple Isaiah's longtime
rabbi, Joseph Hurwitz.
Besides the sanctuary, there's the
Liberman Chapel, which was the origi-
nal sanctuary. Just outside the entry is
a newly installed stained glass work of
art, designed by local artist Irving
Munowitz. This, too, is a donation
from an artist who supports the syna-
gogue.
Besides the sanctuary, chapel and
offices, the facilities here include two
libraries, three kosher kitchens, a grand
ballroom, a youth lounge, a separate
educational wing and the grand ball-
room, with four giant glass chandeliers.
Just outside is an outdoor garden with
a waterfall and benches for relaxing.
Visitors also note the black marble
monolith in the foyer of the syna-
gogue. The inscription on top reads:
"In appreciation to Frank Sinatra for
helping make the dream of our center
for Jewish life come true."
Sinatra, who is Catholic, has been a
supporter of the congregation, and was
especially helpful when members
launched a fund-raising drive 10 years
ago for the new wing.
From a small group founded in 1950
— 10 years after Palm Springs itself
was chartered — Temple Isaiah has
expanded to include over 900 families,
the largest congregation in the area.
Members include year-round resi-
dents as well as "snowbirds" who
come south to the warm desert climate
for the winter season. Because this is
Palm Springs, the congregation also
includes high-profile members such as
actor Kirk Douglas and philanthropists
Walter and Lenore Annenberg.
All of them find an environment
where Jewish life is flourishing. Weekly
Shabbat services are held in the large
sanctuary on Friday evenings and Sat-
urday mornings, with daily Orthodox
minyans in the chapel. In addition,
there's a full roster of cultural activities,
including adult education classes,
youth activities, Shabbat dinners and
special art exhibits.
One of the most popular annual
events is the Herbert E.Toor lecture
series sponsored by JCC, with a line-
\ /=0
up of prominent speakers each year.
These lectures are so well attended that
the 1,200-seat sanctuary is usually
filled to capacity.
From well-attended Shabbat services
to special events like the lecture series,
visitors to Palm Springs will find that
Jewish life is blooming in the desert.
