who take lessons with them are not
Jewish.
However, many engaged Jewish cou-
ples sign up to learn steps for their first
spin as a married pair.
Part of that trend began more than
40 years ago with a man named Joe
Cornell, who taught dance in the
Catskills. The Jewish families he met
asked him to continue private lessons 0—<
back home in Michigan, and he started
offering classes in people's basements.
Since 1957, the company has been
teaching sixth-graders ballroom danc-
ing, social graces and self-esteem,
according to Becca Schlussel who, with
her brother Steve Jasgur, has owned Joe
Cornell for seven years.
"The ballroom dancing aspect of the
business has been constant," she says.
"Ballroom has never been bigger — we
have over 400 sixth-graders enrolled in
our 15-week program."
While they have only a small adult
clientele, for two decades Joe Cornell
has cornered the market in dance
lessons for bar mitzvah-age kids.
Now, Stardust is going head-to-head
with Joe Cornell for the bar mitzvah
circuit.
Dancing is a "super healthy, physical-
ly, mentally, spiritually uplifting sport,"
says Stardust owner Glenn Clark. "It's
great for kids because there's so much
other [negative] stuff out there."
Like Stardust, Joe Cornell offers pri-
vate and semi-private lessons, but no
large adult classes. Most of Joe Cornell's
adult clients are getting ready for wed-
clings.
"People want to learn to dance for
their future as a couple," Jasgur says.
Motivated by trends on both the
East and West coasts, swing is the
trendiest dance, followed by tango,
mambo and samba.
In the Detroit area, at least five sites
offer dance lessons for adults, which
include Latin, ballroom, country and
western, waltz and swing. There also are
studios for hip-hop, hustle, modern
jazz, tap, belly dancing and country and
western line dancing. Plus, bars like the
Velvet Lounge in Pontiac offer swing
lessons, while Diamonds & Spurs, also
in Pontiac, teaches country and western
line dances to bar patrons who arrive
early.
The Edgars, of West Bloomfield,
have been taking dance lessons at Star-
dust since October. With the weddings
of their son and one of their daughters
coming up later this year, the pair want-
ed to make sure they knew what they
were doing on the dance floor.
"We enjoyed it so much, we contin-
