in news conferences and on talk shows,

the government and bureaucracy for
lack of coordination and general failure
this time around.
The radio interviewer demanded,
"Why didn't you voice this criticism
during the crisis instead of waiting until
it was over?"
"I did," Mitzna answered, citing
examples. The interviewer wasn't satis-
fied, saying Mitzna hadn't been forth-
right enough.
Indeed, even the criticism was criti-
cized.
The threat of Saddam Hussein's
anthrax missiles had left Israelis worn
out, backbiting, beating each other's
breasts. There had been nothing about
the ordeal to divide left from right, reli-
gious from secular, rich from poor, yet
Israeli society still emerged as its old,
fractious self.
The war with Iraq was over. The war
