A district court judge starts an Internet venture
that is designed to educate the masses.
If you're celebrating your
engagement, wedding,
"Case of the Week" section discusses
prominent cases. This week, Cooper
answers questions and provides links
where cyber surfers can read court
opinions on drunk driving cases and
the case of Paula Jones vs. President
Bill Clinton.
The humor section contains on-
the-record comments by attorneys,
witnesses, and judges (Lawyer: "How
many of your autopsies are performed
on dead people?" Doctor: "All my
autopsies are performed on dead peo-
ple.").
So far, response to the site has been
good.
"Computer people have told me
the site is well organized, and attor-
neys like that there are links to
research areas," he said.
Cooper also stressed that "educat-
lenty of people have their
day in court. Few are pre-
pared once they get there.
Southfield District Court
Judge Stephen Cooper hopes to pro-
vide a kind of lifejacket for the hapless
with his new Web site. Located at
http://members.aol.com/Judgecoop,
the site has been up and running for
nearly three weeks, after several
months of development.
"It's what I worked on when I
couldn't sleep at night," he says. "It
doesn't replace lawyers, but it can
assist in getting documentation
together."
Cooper, a past president of the
Michigan District Court Judges
Association, previ-
ously developed a
Web site for that
organization.
"My site is tai-
lored to what
happens in this
court and this
county, not
statewide,"
Cooper explains.
"It took a while
to figure out
what to put on
the site."
