teach tolerance and overcome the polar-
ization that has beset the State of Israel.
More than 2,500 students study in
this educational community, which
extends from elementary school to post-
rabbinic study.
Through the Legacy 21 Program, the
yeshiva reaches out to Jews in Israel and
throughout the world. It has organized
a comprehensive center of Jewish learn- c/
ing in Kharkov in the Ukraine. This
includes a high school with 140 stu-
dents, a summer camp, and a college
youth center. Fifty families and 150 stu-
dents have made aliyah to Israel, as a
result of thisprogram.
The Sha'al Institute trains educators
and rabbis to serve small Jewish com-
munities throughout the world. More
than 150 such emissaries serve in 26
countries.

Shdalvim also helps in the absorp-
tion of immigrants by providing enrich-
ment programs for adults and children.
This assists new immigrant families in
adjusting to Israeli life. More than 300
Sha'alvim alumni serve in rabbinic and
educational positions throughout Israel.
In an effort to decrease hostility
between the various segments of Israeli
society, the Am Yisrael Echad Program
was instituted. In this program, dozens
of secular kibbutzim and moshavim
host Shdalvim alumni and faculty for
study and an honest exchange of views.
Sha'alvim has also touched our own
community. Fourteen young men from
the Detroit area have studied there for
up to three years, and one Detroiter is
(-/
on the staff of the school. Rabbi Avram
Goldstein, the principal of a division of
Akiva Hebrew Day School, and Rabbi
Eli Mayerfeld, director of development
of the Beth Yehudah Schools, both
received part of their rabbinical training
at Yeshivat Sha'alvim.

❑

The first annual reception of
Detroit Friends of Yeshivat
Sha'alvim will be held on Sun-
day, March 1, at 7:30 p.m. at
the home of Elana and Max
Berlin. For information and/or
reservations, please contact Elana
