Exodus ship, the 1948 Declaration of
Independence (complete with whirling
hora dancers), reclaiming the Kotel in
the Six Day War, a scene from the Yom
Kippur War, and the Camp David -
summit with Prime Ministers Begin,
Sadat, and President Carter.
A row of glass-cased "Jewish life"
scenes includes a circumcision, bar
mitzvah, wedding, a Purim Carnival, a
shul on Yom Kippur, and families cele-
brating Succot.
Then, just for fun, it seems, an
arched passageway leads to the "Hall of
Fairy Tales" (Ulam HaAggadot), with
whimsical scenes from Aladdin,. Sleep-
ing Beauty Pinochio, Cinderella, et al.
I got a kick out of deciphering the
signs in Hebrew — for example, "Alisa
b'aretz ha'pla'oto" (Alice in Wonder-
land), and my yeshiva student kids had
a blast trying to one-up each other
pouncing on Bible scene inaccuracies
("Look! There's a sheep caught in the
bush! It's supposed to be a ram!" and
"Why are there only nine brothers of
Yosef? There should be eleven!" etc.).
But the showcases were enchanting,
and the ingenuity displayed in con-
structing the scenes was truly fascinat-
ing.
The museum, which opened in
1994, is the brainchild of Leonardo
Nisemblatt, a retiree who immigrated
to Israel from Columbia, South Ameri-
ca. He was inspired by his artist wife,
Estella, who collects and makes dolls.
Some of the other artists who
helped make the dolls, costumes and
scenes in the museum include Magda
Watts, a woman from Hungary who
survived Auschwitz by making dolls for
the German officers, and Irina
Smorodin, a fashion designer from
Moscow.
The Doll Museum is open Sunday-
Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Friday, 9
a.m.-2 p.m. Plan on spending about
two delightful hours there. II
