t's a little off the beaten track on
a standard Israel tour, but should
you happen to be in or near the
Golan Heights on your next trip
to the Holy Land, stop by the city of
Katzrin and check out the Doll Muse- c--\
um (Moo zay-own Boo-bot). Especially
if you've got kids in tow. And even if
they're boys.
This little gem is not only charm-
ing; it's educational, too. The only
museum of its kind in the world, near-
ly 1,00.0 handmade papier-mache dolls
fill eighty showcased dioramas winding
through the museum hall.
The dolls, props and scenery, crafted
and costumed with wonderful detail,
depict the history of the Jewish people.
Starting with the creation of the
world, with Adam and Eve (in fig
leaves, of course), all the Bible stories
you learned about in Hebrew school
are there, and then some. There's
Noah's Ark, Abraham and the binding
of Isaac, Joseph and his brothers, the
Jews as slaves in Egypt.
Scenes dramatize the crossing of the
Red Sea, Moses descending Mt. Sinai,
the siege of Jericho, Samson and
Delilah, David and Goliath, Daniel in
the lions' den, and much more.
Following these are scenes from
modern Jewish history, from the Mac-
cabees through the destruction of the
Second Temple, and including the
Spanish Inquisition, a Russian pogrom,
the Dreyfus Affair, and a harrowing
scene of a Holocaust concentration
camp.
