A COMPELLING DRAMA...

He is a great artist. His art is pure, but is he...
...if his clamorous audience is the Nazi regime?

berly Jajuan in a scene from "Dream-
girls," the story of three girls who rise to
stardom and the top of the music charts.

began collaborating on The Dirtiest
Musical and moved on to Dreamgirls.
At about the same time, Krieger's agent
got him composing work for TV's
"Captain Kangaroo," and he wrote 10
songs a season for three seasons.
"That was fun," he said. "I like
[writing] for children. It gives me
hope."
After Dreamgirls' initial Broadway
run, Krieger finished The Tap Dance
Kid and then did a show in England.
"People say that my music has Jew-
ish nuances and that the song 'One
Night Only' from Dreamgirls- sounds
very Jewish," Krieger said. "I think that
some of the ways I write probably has
to do with being Jewish."
Krieger, whose partner also is in
show business, thinks of himself as a
spiritual person and says he offers
thanks every day. His hopes for the
future involve producing more while
continuing to compose.
"Tom [Eyen] and I were just a cou-
ple of writers trying to come up with a
story we thought worked," he recalled
about Dreamgirls. "As the show took on
more life, there were certain conclu-
sions that people made about its being
[the story of] the Supremes. That was-
n't our intention. ,
"Diana Ross told me that she
enjoyed it greatly and has used [songs]
from the show in her concerts." 0

Dreamgirls will be performed at 8
