Apartments in Detroit. "There are so
many wonderful places to live in and
around Detroit that we haven't made
up our mind yet where to plant
roots," says Kahalas. His wife, Dianne,
is an interior designer.
For some, moving from New York
and Cape Cod (they lived at both dur-
ing the stint at U-Mass.) to Detroit
might be a bit of a culture shock.

Kahalas laughs when he contemplates
the differences between sweet, old

ty," says Kahalas. He cites the recent
business and entertainment develop-
ments in Detroit and Mayor Dennis
Archer's history as a doer. "Also, the
commitment from the private sector
to support the school of business is
absolutely spectacular," says the dean.
No stranger to the Great Lakes State,
Kahalas has lived and worked in
Michigan. After receiving his under-
graduate degree from Boston
University, he earned a master's of
business administration from the
University of Michigan. Then it was
back East to work on his Ph.D. at the
University of Massachusetts. Before
completing his undergraduate degree,
he moved to Plymouth, Mich., and
worked for Ford Motor Company at
the Wayne assembly facility.
He also spent a few years as a
full-time consultant for General
Motors in the '80s, when the com-
pany was undergoing a massive
restructuring of its automotive
assembly plants.
But his favorite hat to wear is
absolutely the dean's cap. "It's the best
job in the world. I was a dean twice
before and, although it's time consum-
ing and demanding, I made up my
mind about a year ago to back to
deaning." ❑
