afternoon ceremony (most Israelis
spent the nights in shelters). Six
months later, they moved to
Jerusalem and Hochstadt started
learning full-time through Aish
HaTorah.
Accepted to Aish's kollel program,
Hochstadt was paid a stipend to
learn Torah for a year and teach
Hebrew. He was ordained in March
1995.
"Aish said, 'We want people who
have been willing to sacrifice for the
Jewish people in Israel, to go abroad,
help the people who are getting lost
in what we call the silent Holocaust,
which is going on today,"' he recalls.

time I finished smicha (rabbinic
ordination). It was difficult to find a
position for us. To relocate was a

but it will link Detroiters via satel-

"about why it is so important that
for Jews to maintain their connec-
tion and identity, it's necessary they
learn Torah."
Hochstadt's agenda includes reor-
ganizing Aish locally.
"Aish HaTorah has been around
long enough to say that we have
alumni, but we need to provide
those people with programming as
well. We want to open a center in
Birmingham, [plan] concerts, events,
singles, Shabbos dinners," he said.
And he hopes to provide higher-
level programming for individuals
who have already started learning.
"The third part is the funding, to
let the leadership in the area see
what we're doing, what we want to
do, what the vision is," Hochstadt
said. "Aish HaTorah's successes in
