ALISON ASHTON
Special to The Jewish News
elebrities are just average folks,
insists trainer-to-the-stars
Mark Stevens, even if they
don't believe it.
Well, OK, but the rich and famous
don't work out like you and me —
unless, of course, you follow a grueling
routine two hours a day under the
watchful eye of a trainer like Stevens.
That's why actors preparing to go before
the cameras go to Stevens' Brentwood,
Calif, studio that goes by the no-non-
sense name The Gym. The former
member of the British Olympic swim-
ming team has put a lot of famous bod-
ies through his version of movie star
boot camp. His client roster has includ-
ed Jamie Lee Curtis, Sharon Stone, Teri
Hatcher, Tatjiana Patitz, Dean Cain and
Cindy Crawford — all known for their
perfect physiques.
Getting into camera shape requires a
lot of sweat equity, and Stevens' hard-
body routine proves most great bodies
aren't born, they're made. He typically
spends six weeks working one-on-one
with actors. Each program is custom
tailored, but usually involves workouts
seven days a week and following a
Spartan (i.e., boring) diet of low-fat
protein and carbohydrates. Programs
are designed to build lean muscle and
melt away fat as quickly as possible.
Although Stevens is known for getting
amazing results in a hurry, he doesn't
advocate this strict regimen for anyone,
really.
'We don't recommend that people
do hard-core, intense workouts," he
explains. But actors often come to him
with limited time to get into picture-
perfect shape.
He'll design a schedule based on
their needs — which usually depends
on how much skin they'll show on-
screen.
"Some people are known for one
area of their body and we'll work on
that," he says.
An actress who knows she'll spend
much of her time in a tank top might
work on toning her arms, while an
actor who will take off his shirt will
want to add definition to his chest, abs
and shoulders. Nude scenes require
overall perfection. Just think of actor
Brendan Fraser, who spent four months
pumping iron to bulk up to the car-
