Israel Embarks
On Tourism Years

New York — "We're expecting a vast
wave of tourism over the next three
/' years," says Arie Sommer, Israel's com-
missioner for tourism in the United
States. "Just last month we started the
official celebrations surrounding Israel's
50th anniversary," Sommer added,
referring to the year-long series of events
throughout Israel in tribute to the
reborn Jewish state's first half-century.
As many as 100,000 additional U.S.
visitors are expected to become involved
. niversary celebrations, particu-
in the an
larly those in the country on the
anniversary itself (April 30, 1998) and
in August, when a massive exhibition on
the achievements of Israel will be
mounted in Tel Aviv.
"And then," Sommer continued,
"1999 will be a relatively normal year;
then comes 2000 which marks the
2,000th birthday of Christianity." As
many as 5 million tourists — double
the usual 2.5 million, and possibly
more — are expected in Israel in
2000, according to Israel tourism offi-
cials, who are feverishly preparing suf-
ficient accommodations to meet the
demand.
"An additional innovation to deal
with enormous numbers of visitors
expected in the millennium year was
announced recently," Sommer contin-
ued. This will involve Israel's Airport
Authority and the Ministry of Tourism
arranging for all groups visiting Israel
during the millennium year to have
advance flight check-in undertaken at
their hotels.
At the end of their tour, departing
travelers will check-in, have their bags
checked to their destination and receive
their boarding passes — all in the com-
fort of their hotels.
Later, when they arrive at Ben-
Gurion International, they will proceed
directly to the departure lounge, bypass-
ing the customary check in lines. "This
really creative step will do much to ease
congestion and make visitors' departure
from Israel particularly agreeable,"
Sommer observed.
