"I next was a writer and producer
of radio in Los Angeles for CBS. In
1980, I moved to Canada and was the
artistic director for Toronto's Second
City for some years before returning
to Chicago and working for Second
City as well as other improvisational
theaters."
Gellman's work in Toronto earned
eight Dona Mayor Moore nomina-
tions (Canada's version of the Tony
Award), including Outstanding Direc-
tor.
Gellman, whose father is Jewish,
was brought up in a home that cele-
brated both Jewish and Christian
holidays. He believes that he picked
up on Jewish humor through his
background and compares his out-
look to what he notices in other
Jewish comedians.
"We come out of a culture of Jew-
ish understanding, awareness and
approach to the world," he said.
"There's a reason why most people
outside the Jewish community know
what `L'Chaim' means.
"We embrace that life and hopeful-
ly comedy does, too. Although come-
dy can be cynical and stab at targets,
ultimately most comedy is about
hope, life and coping with life."
Gellman's personal coping involved
a winning fight against cancer. As a
survivor, he gives time to projects that
raise funds for research and promote
awareness of the disease.
When Gellman goes out to be
entertained by others, he enjoys all
kinds of shows from opera to rock.
Getaways take him trout fishing.
Still, there's no question that work
is his favorite pastime.
"I love directing," he said. "I enjoy
putting all the elements together." ❑
