Lamarr also is, believe it or not, an
early developer of the cellular
phone. While married to Fritz
Mandl, she had seen films showing

Hedy Lamarr was
one of the most
beautiful and glam-
orous stars of the
1940s. Born Hedwig Kiesler in
Vienna in 1914, she was a teen-
ager when she appeared in a sultry
film called Ecstasy. (She would later
harken back to this film in her auto-
biography Ecstasy and Me.) In a
marriage arranged by her parents,
Lamarr in 1933 wed armament
manufacturer Fritz Mandl. It was not
a happy union.
In 1937, Lamarr escaped from
her overly protective spouse and left
for London. There she appeared on
