are brief but firm. Often referred to
as the "thou shalt nots," they guide
us in our actions toward others.
"You shall not murder," forbids
the taking of human life. "You - shall
not commit adultery," stresses the
sanctity of marriage. "You shall not
steal," bans theft, cheating, embezzle-
ment and forgery. "You shall not bear
false witness against your neighbor,"
prohibits defamation of people.
According to the commentaries,
the Tenth Commandment, "You shall
not covet," goes to the rootof all evil.
If one does not covet, one will not
commit any of the previous four
commandments.
These 10 laws are still the founda-
tion of Judaism as well as the code of
law by which all civilized nations live.
Despite the fact they were written over

European Firms
Defy U.S. Policy

London (JTA) — European oil com-
panies are poised to defy U.S. sanc-
tions aimed at curbing foreign invest,-
ment in Iran's oil and gas industry.._
Such action would not only bolstei:
Iran's economy — and, potentially,
its nuclear weapons program — but
also tilltlimine American policy.
ELitopean companies are reported-
ly eager to strike :deals with Iran as
soon as possible in .a bid to pre-empt'
potential U.S. commercial involve-
ment in the event of a diplomatic
breakthrough between Washington'
and Tehran.
European and Iranian sources con-
firmed that European companies are
close to striking deals with Iran in the
oil and gas sectors.
