After The Flood

Executive staffing at the Jewish Community Center
is finally holding steady.

Mr hen David Sorkin
arrived as executive
director of the Jewish
Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit in July 1996,
the agency was in a state of flux.
Turnover at the executive level was
high because of the uncertainty sur-
rounding the Center's future, the bud-
get deficit was growing, and because
of both of those issues, morale was
low.
Sorkin, who had
mastered crisis man-
agement at the
Wilmington JCC in
Delaware, was
brought in to stop
the flood.
Since his appoint-
ment, there has been
minimal turnover at
what he calls "key
levels": Only two of
25 department heads
have left since he
joined the JCC.
. "With this many
staff (449 full- and
part-time), people
will leave, but it's
not always a bad
thing," Sorkin said.
"People move on,
and with this many staff, it's a normal
process."
Sorkin created a management team
that consists of himself; Margo
Weitzer, director of programming;
Leslie Bash, director of the Jimmy
Prentis Morris JCC in Oak Park; and
Chief Administrative Officer Jim
Karshina. Stuart Wachs, the program
director of recreational services, was
added to the team three months ago,
only six months after his arrival from
the Houston JCC.
In 1995, the Center projected a
deficit of $450,000. Two months later,
Mort Plotnick moved from executive
director to director of development,
and Assistant Director Leah Ann Kle-
infeldt became interim executive direc-
to r.

A marketing director, Sandi Klein,
was hired in March 1995 and quit six
months later; another assistant execu-
tive director, Bruce Landgarten, left
in June 1995; Kleinfeldt had the
interim title removed from her name,
but by the end of the year stepped
down to spend more time with her
family, and became associate execu-
tive director.
At the end of 1996, Kleinfeldt's
position was eliminated in a budget
cut.
Before Sorkin's arrival, there was an
executive director and several assistant
executive directors.
"We changed the
system of manage-
ment that had been
in place."
Plotnick's move
was agreeable to
everyone, he said.
