Tough And Tender;
Tucson, Arizona

LEWIS ERIC LACHTER
Special to The Jewish News

I

n Tucson, the huge desert area
is bleak yet beautiful. The
mountains soar around the
town. The Jewish community,
while relatively small, is vibrant.
For a quick overview of the
Tucson Jewish community of yester- c_(
day (the first Jews arrived in 1854)
and today (the community numbers
20,000), get a copy of the booklet
"Shalom Tucson," which is produced
by the Women's Division of the
Jewish Federation of Southern
Arizona and the Jewish Community
Center.
The booklet tells of the men who
became cattlemen, judges and may- ci-=\'
ors; the women who started schools,
organized synagogues and developed
the social service agencies.
There are four Conservative syna-
gogues in town, four Reform and
three Orthodox.
Jewish cultural events abound.
There is an annual Jewish Film
Festival, a Jewish culture "shuk" —
an evening of Jewish education at
c--/
the Tucson Hebrew Academy — and

annual programs including an inter-
faith commemoration and a women's
conference.
The Tucson Hebrew Academy has
grades one through eight with a cur-
rent enrollment of 171 students.
There are many secular sites in
and around Tucson. One highlight is
the Desert Museum with 300 kinds
of animals, 1,300 kinds of plants
and 200 species of cacti. Saguaro
National Park, Montezuma's Castle
and the Casa Grande Ruins are well
worth visiting
For a desert-country vacation,
Tucson is not to be missed. 0
