o Davis Gloff, losing classi-
cal radio in Detroit has
proven to be a sticky situa-
tion.
The former weekend afternoon
anchor of the now defunct WQRS-
FM station has mounted his own pri-
vate effort to return the music of
Mozart, Bach and Beethoven to the
local airwaves.
And he intends to achieve his goal
with bumper stickers. ,

"Many of the former listeners feel
alone and not empowered. They feel
like they can't do anything to bring

Gloff, whose smooth baritone voice
has filled the sanctuary of Temple
Emanu-El as a member of the syna-
gogue's adult choir for the last 20
years, began his efforts shortly after
the station changed its format in late
November from entirely classical to
alternative rock.
The switch left Detroit without a
classical music station.
Although other stations like
WCBC (89.9) and WDET (101.9)
continue to broadcast some classical
music, there has been no individual or
station that has come forth to fill the
void created when WQRS went rock.

the music back," said the Pleasant
Ridge resident. "Individually, maybe
they can't. But together, who knows
what can happen?"
Gloff knows a message on a
bumper sticker will not bring back the
classical format to the former WQRS.
Instead, the stickers, which read,
"Detroit Needs Classical Music," are
designed to motivate individuals to
form a coalition to restore a classical
radio station to Detroit listeners.
"I am just trying to inspire people
to do the right thing," he said.

WQRS," said Nitsa Stoddard, a
Bloomfield Hills woman who found-
ed a grassroots movement to restore a
full-time classical music station to
Detroit.
While the loss of such a specialty
station affects the entire area, it partic-
ularly impacts the Jewish community,
Gloff said. During his broadcasts,
Gloff made an effort to provide the
community with Jewish classical
music for major Jewish holidays. -
"WQRS was the only station that
did any major events in conjunction
