NEW ON CD Passionate yet soothing, the music of Lori Kaufman, known as NinetyNine, is similar in artistry and beauty to the work of popular pianist George Winston. However, it offers something more; in the midst of her work are some dis- tinctly Jewish rhythms. For example, in "Avinu Malkenu," the listener hears the notes of what appears to be a sim- ple but elegant composition — until the familiar strains of the prayer are heard. Aa Kaufman's ability practically leaps from the CD. In "Menucha," she builds a gentle but stirring melody, while in "Shema Yisrael," she lends an almost Arabic-inspired undertone that builds to a more traditional classical feel. While the entire repertoire of origi- nal songs is truly remarkable for a first release, there are two standouts. The first song and namesake of the 10-song compact disc, "Stones of Fire," is breathtakingly beautiful. Taken from a passage in the Book of Ezekiel, the song is about 12 gem- stones which relate to the 12 tribes of Israel. The artist, using gematriah, relates the passage as well to the 12 tones in music. But perhaps the most haunting is "For Shlomo," an adoring love song on the surface. It is so darkly romantic and builds to such a fantastic crescen- do that it makes one wonder who the heck Shlomo is. For the record, the song is actually a tribute to Shlomo Carlebach, a rabbi who is known as the father of Jewish music. All of the songs carry a Jewish theme. But it is the simple artistry and beauty of the work that makes this music appealing to all crowds, Jews and non-Jews alike. ---- Reviewed by Jill Davidson Sklar EAT IN OR CARRY OUT COMBINE TO BRING YOU THE FINEST IN TRADITIONAL JEWISH HOME COOKING! • GARLIC DRESSING • GEFILTE FISH •MATZO BALL SOUP • POTATO KNISHES •MUSHROOM BARLEY SOUP •VEGETARIAN CHOPPED LIVER • SPINACH KNISHES • RAISIN KUGEL •STUFFED CABBAGE •TURKEY KNISHES • DILL DRESSING •APPLE STRUDEL AND SO MUCH MORE •PICKLED TROUT HOURS: MON.-SAT. 8 a.m.-6 p.m., SUN. 8 a.m.-3 p.m. r STARGAZING Can't jet out to Hollywood on March 23 for the annual Oscar night extravaganza? It was another glorious Hollywood evening, only it happened in Orchard Lake. For their 12th annual musical . party, Marvin and Marci Shulman hosted an evening dubbed "A Night at the Oscars." The men wore black tie and the women donned gowns, and everyone sported red AIDS ribbons. Highlights of the evening included renditions of Oscar-winning tunes over the years, and, most important,. the opportunity for guests to make contri- butions to the Michigan Jewish AIDS Coalition (MJAC). The organization provides educational programs for the community and referrals and support to those touched by HIV/AIDS. The Shulmans' soiree — Marvin is an area ophthalmologist, and Marcy is a cantorial soloist at Temple Israel — collected almost $500 for MJAC.
