explains, adding that as a student this
irritated her and some fellow classmates
as well.
"We decided that it would be so
wonderful if you went to a concert and
you would be listening to pianist X or
pianist number whatever," she
explained. "It would be great to take
the ego aspect out of it and just enjoy
the music."
Last year, Kaufman began inter-
spersing some of her gematriah-
inspired . compositions with more
widely known works at her recitals
and found that people reacted more to
her adaptations than to the classics she
was performing.
"People started asking me where
they could buy my music," she said.
This fall, as NinetyNine, she released
Stones of Fire, a 10-track compact disc
of all original, mostly gematriah-

inspired melodies as well as some tradi-
tional Jewish tunes set to more New
Age music.
Although her work has earned her
praise and recognition, she has no tour
planned to promote her works. Instead,
she is focusing on continuing to com-
pose more music, including a violin
sonata and a string quartet piece.
"Right now I am learning about a
lot of compositional techniques and
styles that have come around since I
finished school," Kaufman said. "The
more I compose, the more interested I
get in composing."
