FYI: If Eliezer Ben-Yehuda
was the leading advocate for
a Hebrew-speaking State of
Israel, David Ben-Gurion
wasn't far behind.
Almost everyone has heard tell of
Eliezer Ben-Yehuda's dramatic antics
in an effort to be
certain modern
Hebrew was spo-
ken in Israel. But
did you know
that David Ben-
Gurion also was
determined that
no other lan-
guages, and
David Ben-Gurion:

prominent in the
Jewish state? In
fact, after moving to pre-State Israel in
1906, he demanded that all mem-
bers of his Po'alei Zion (Workers for
Zion) group speak nothing but
Hebrew. Later, he became a leading
force behind the Po'alei Zion% procla-
mation, issued at a 1907 confer-
ence, that all party business be con-
ducted only in Hebrew. Later, Ben-
Gurion extended his position to
include all of public life in Israel. So
dedicated was he that he refused to
work with groups who shared his
goals of Zionism, but whose publica-
tions continued to be printed in
Yiddish.
FYI: A Jewish beauty expert
almost left her indelible mark
on Eva Peron.
In addition to being immortalized
by Madonna, the late Argentinean
almost-vice president (after nominating
herself for the position, she quit when
she became terribly ill) was famous
for her sausage-like hairstyles and her
blood-red lipstick and nail polish. On
her deathbed, Evita asked an atten-
dant to come and remove her polish
before she went off to that great big
hairdresser in the sky. (She didn't
want to meet her maker looking any-
thing less than pure, Eva explained.)
The polish was a product of the
Helena Rubenstein cosmetic line.
FYI: The first bibliography of
Jewish books was compiled
in 1680.
Shabbetai Ben Joseph Bassista
(1641-1718) was a part-time singer
(consequently, he often is referred to
by his nickname, "Bass") whose par-
ents were killed in a pogrom in
1655 in Kalisz, Poland. Together
with his brother, Bass then moved to
c:
Prague, where he studied Talmud
and fell in love with books. For
about five years beginning in
1674, Bass traveled. to libraries
throughout Europe, where he studied
proofreading and printing. In 1680,
he published a list citing 2,200
books on Jewish topics. He men-
tioned not only the book's title but its
author, place and year of publica-
tion and content. Later in life, Bass
set up his own Hebrew printing
press and began selling books. In
the early 1700s Jesuits accused
Bass of distributing anti-Christian
and anti- government material, and
he was arrested. He was, however._/
released when the judges acknowl-
edged the ridiculousness of the
charges against him. Bass' descen-
dants followed in his footsteps, with
his sons and grandsons continuing
in the printing business until well into
the 18th century. ❑
