Settlers Congress and the administration may be distracted by the crisis in Iraq, but that didn't stop two Israeli Peace Now leaders from coming to town to spotlight their concerns about Israeli actions that they say are a major factor in the peace process breakdown. This week, Shalom Achshav founders Galia Golan and Amiram Goldblum were in town with a warning about the consequences of Israel's accelerating settlements activ- ity. Goldblum, who has served as head of the group's Settlement Watch team since 1991, came armed with new demographic surveys and maps of the West Bank. "One of the points we are making is that the settlers population of the West Bank is just under 10 percent of the total population," he said. "But Israel controls at the moment ... 97 percent of West Bank territory, either totally or in the area of securi- ty. But the settlers, he said, "have a disproportionate amount of political power because they are the ones who will go to the streets for the govern- ment, to express dissent from pres- sure from the United States. They have that power because they rein- force the most right-wing elements of the government." He challenged Netanyahu's asser- tion that settlements need to be expanded to accommodate "natural growth." "That idea was proposed by Begin, then Shamir, now Netanyahu," Goldblum said. "But the number of empty houses that exists today in the territories is enough for natural growth for the next three or four years." American Jews, he said, "seem to think that defending settlements is the patriotic thing to do. We argue just the opposite; Jews who care about Israel should try to diminish the danger settlements comprise both in the short and the long run." Golan said she is encountering a growing detachment from Israel among American Jews. "I see a lot of anger here, and a feeling of being disgusted with Israel. What we're encountering is people saying, 'Why should we take an interest any more? What is this country for us now?' That's what worries me the most." p P O UTYOUR THOUGHTS ON FAFER. 12019 THEM OFF AT ZYZYX BY FEBRUARY 15TH. N VALENTINE'S DAY. WE arts, crafts, and jewelry WILL SELECT THE MOST HEARTFELT LETTER.
