Of course, Shabbat is for everyone
— not just families.
"More than one-third of American
Jewish adults are not married, accord-
ing to the National Jewish Population
Study of 1990," Fishman said. "Many
• singles say, `I can't do Shabbat because
/- I'm not married.' Every Jew, regardless
[of marital status] has a right to do
Shabbat."
Fishman provided a "checklist" of
things to do "to try to bring tradition-
al Jewish family values into liberal
households today:

• A strong emphasis on the creation of
a Jewish home from childhood
• onward. "We tell our children not to
get involved in drugs, to practice a
musical instrument. If we want them
to be Jewish, we can tell them why it
is important to create a Jewish home,
by example and by talking.".

• Spend time with children, in Jewish
study and Jewish experiences.

• Talk to teen-agers about sexuality
and how the Jewish tradition "shows
sexuality is important" in marriage.

• Let children know that a Jewish fam-
ily value is honesty in business.

• Make all Jewish homes into "Jewish
feminist homes," meaning that "Shab-
bat belongs to everybody in the house.
All get ready for Shabbat, not just the
mother."

• Respect parents. Spend Shabbat with
aging parents.

"Shabbat is there already, there and
waiting, whether we are observing it
or not, and regardless of which wing
of Judaism we do or do not belong to.
We have the opportunity to access the
Sabbath day, remember the Sabbath
day — it's there already," Fishman
