Christopher's Hospital for Children in
Philadelphia.
Kids who know how to behave
around dogs are least likely to run into
trouble. Teach children never to hit a
dog or grab anything from a dog's
mouth.
Joffe points out that dogs are pack
animals who perceive adults as domi-
nant leaders. Small children, however,
may be viewed as peers who can be
pushed around. For that reason, par-
ents should never leave an infant alone
with a dog.
If your child is bitten, clean the
wound immediately with soap and
water, and apply pressure to stop the
bleeding. Visit the pediatrician imme-
diately. If the offending dog is suspect-
ed of having rabies, your child will
need a series of five vaccinations over
the course of a month.
Although kids are more likely to be
bitten by a familiar dog, they still may
run into an unfamiliar aggressive
canine. In "Dogs For Dummies"
(IDG Books), Gina Spadafori urges all
parents to teach their children how to
behave around strange dogs. Kids
should know:
• Never approach a loose dog, even
one that seems friendly.
• Stand still when a strange dog
approaches. Avoid making eye contact.
Back away from a growling dog very
slowly.
• If a dog attacks, "feed" it a jacket
or backpack or use a bicycle as a barri-
er — anything to avoid having teeth
connect with flesh.
• Act like a log if you're knocked
down: Lie face-down, curled into a
ball with your legs together, covering
the back of the neck with your fists
and protecting the ears with your fore-
arms.
