in Thailand
were explored in pre-Revolutionary
times; Colonial Jews were active par-
ticipants.
For instance, when merchants gath-
ered here in 1774 to discuss and then
pass the non-importation resolutions
against British goods, 10 of the 12
Jewish merchants in the city signed
the agreement.
From Carpenter's Hall we walked
south on Fourth Street, passing beauti-
fully restored Colonial homes that are
typical of the Society Hill area. On
Spruce Street, we stopped to look at the
Society Hill Synagogue at 418 Spruce
Street, built as a Baptist church in 1829.
Later it became a synagogue.
Walking west on Spruce, we soon
came to Mikveh Israel Cemetery at
831 Spruce, with a historic marker
posted near the iron gate. Although
the cemetery is not open to visitors,
we easily could look through the gate
to see the weathered tombstones.
Many prominent Colonial Jews are
buried here, including Haym
Solomon, the financier who gave
financial backing to the Revolutionary
government, and Rebecca Gratz, who
founded the nation's earliest Sunday
school and worked on behalf of the
poor. Also buried here are 21 Jewish
soldiers who fought in the Revolution-
ary War.
The 250-year-old cemetery was the
appropriate final stop on our tour.
This modest burial ground was anoth-
er reminder that in a city so rich in
history, Colonial Jews played an
important role.
