Evangelism stands behind a pulpit
too often whittled by swindle. The
Southern-drawled hucksterism of its
Bakkers and Swaggarts tends to be so
slicked-back, so shamelessly shuck and
jive, all its used-car religious fervor
leaves back at the office is a bumper-
to-bumper warranty.
The Apostle cannot run away from
evangelism's checkered past. It does
not try to. It wants instead.to get at

the grass roots of a man who spews
fire and brimstone, and pull at the
weeds for a while.
It doesn't need Tru-Green to find
them. The Apostle begins with Euliss
"Sonny" Dewey (Robert Duvall) wan-
dering down to a car wreck on the
side of the road, if only to convert the
nearly lifeless boy pinned behind its
steering wheel. The words he uses are
at once consoling and profane; the
broken body in front of him needs a
doctor, but Sonny fashions himself a
roadside healer who can swab any
wound, save any life by more decisive-
ly saving its soul.
