Wenger shows how the Depression
charted the course for American Jewry
throughout the century. Writing the
first major work of its kind, she stud-
ied how Jewish families — still immi-
grants — and their children adjusted
to the upheaval of the time. Wenger,
professor of Jewish history at the
University of Pennsylvania, also looks
into changes shaking community life:
philanthropy which builds Jewish
commitment, new secular and cultural
roles for the synagogue and others.

My Years in Theresienstadt
By Gerty Spies, translated by Jutta R.
Tragnitz; Prometheus Books; $2695.
In her story of subtle courage dur-
ing the Holocaust, Spies writes of her
experiences hiding a diary from camp
guards, reaching out to the other pris-
oners and searching for some consola-
tion in the simple beauty of nature.
She tells of her vision of the
Theresienstadt dead, warning from the
dark, "Speak to the others. Do not
forget us." Then, this 100-year-old
passes their message on to her readers
with a warning of her own: "Forgive,
but never forget."

Enchanted Evenings
By Geoffrey Block; Oxford University
Press; $35.
In this history of the American
musical, Block reviews Broadway from
the 1920s through the early '60s.
Broadway moves from Show Boat to
Sondheim as Block traces fourteen
shows from idea to stage. As a profes-
sor of music, Block focuses on the
musical side of each product, as corn-
poser, director and others work
together to create the final work.
