or the first time in months,
Barry Fishier was able to
fully relax last weekend.
Thanks to a long-term
settlement hammered out with his
employer last week, Fishier, an
Orthodox Jew, will be able to observe
Shabbat without fear of penalty.
A forklift operator at a Chrysler
Jeep manufacturing plant in Toledo,
Fishier had been scheduled to work a
Friday night shift since October.
Although he repeatedly requested an
alternate schedule, he received several
disciplinary measures for not reporting
to work and feared he would eventual-
ly be dismissed.
Under the settle-
ment, Fishier will be
Barry Fishier excused from Friday
with his 8-
night work and will be
year-old son
rescheduled to a new
Yitzchok Dov. shift once a suitable job
becomes available.
"In the current legal climate,
Chrysler probably could have chosen
to fight this for a long time," said
Fishler's attorney, Peter Silverman.
"Instead, they worked hard to accom-
modate him. The whole Jewish corn-
munity should be appreciative of what
Chrysler has done."
Megan Giles, a Chrysler spokesper-
son, said, "We're a big company but
we do try to accommodate people
with different issues and lifestyles. We
want happy workers."
As for Fishier, he's still pinching
himself to make sure it's not a dream.
"I feel like the weight of the world has
been lifted off me," he said. 5
