I can attest to the power of that
blessing. When my children kiss
my hand before I give them their
blessing, the tenderness I feel is
superimposed on a flashback of
me doing the same thing with my
parents; in fact, if my parents
speak with me on Friday after-
noon, they bless me over the
phone.

Frequently, those seem to float
unheeded in my house at 4:02
p.m. when Shabbat starts at 4:09
p.m. I'm in the shower; my hus-
band Michael, a rabbi, is giving
Shoshana a bath and he has to
leave for the synagogue; Shira
hasn't cleaned the paint and
sparkles from her latest art project,
and the brownies are still baking.
When I light candles with my hair
wet and my bathrobe flapping, I'm
hardly the picture of the serene
Shabbat queen surrounded by her -
beatifically smiling children.
Instead, I feel like I have PSS —
Pre-Shabbat Syndrome.
"Some weeks, celebrating
Shabbat is a strain," agrees Dr.
Ron Wolfson, author of The
Shabbat Seder. Yet, he says, "its
overall effect is tremendous. It is
the sum total of Shabbatot that
makes an impact. It's a long-term
investment that bonds- couples clos-
er together, that creates significant
family moments, that roots Jewish
