AKIVA HEBREW DAY SCHOOL
invites you to our
-
n Sunday mornings,
almost without fail, I go to
the Royal Oak Flea
Market. How wondrous it is that
every week I find something I just
can't live without.
Recent purchases have included
black shoes from the 1940s (a little
big, but sometimes a decent fit must
be sacrificed in the name of nostal-
gia and fashion), a new Christian
Dior lipstick, and an
unopened bottle of
"Forever Spring" skin
freshener. That's the
stuff Connie Stevens
sells for something
like $15 on the
shopping channel,
and I picked it up for
50 cents. I can't wait
to see how it changes
my wrinkles, my skin, my life!
(Thank you, Connie!)
I never tire of looking at all the
treasures; or "junk" as my husband
calls it, and I'm particularly
intrigued by antique photographs.
They're for sale at many booths,
and include everything from tintypes
to pictures from as recent as 20
years ago. Although I enjoy looking
at them, I can't help but wonder
how these pictures came to be for
sale. Who would abandon them,
leave them for vendors to sell for a
dollar?
I am especially charmed by pho-
tographs of children. Once I came
across a picture of a little Russian
girl; I believe Anya was her name.
It was taken in 1912. Anya
appeared to be about 2. She was
surrounded by flowers, lying in her
coffin. When I saw it I began to
cry, then quickly moved away. It
was too painful to linger.
Mostly, though, the old photos I
see show happy children. Recently I
found a picture I liked a great deal,
a pretty girl and her brother smiling
mischievously. They were on the
steps of a house, and on the back
was written: Detroit 1933. It was a
corner home, and I could barely
make out the name on the street
sign, which I have since forgotten. I
thought: I bet I could still find that
house today. The children have
long since grown up, perhaps even
died, yet the building likely remains.
Sometimes I am so drawn to the
pictures that I have thought of buy-
ing them. But for what purpose? So
mostly I walk away after having
looked. But not always.
On occasion, I have
seen a picture that I had
to buy it and that was
it. This photograph
(inset) is one of
those, a very
favorite photograph
for many years.
From the writing on
the back I know it
shows a child whose
first name is Lex, and whose
last name is Nise or Wise. He (I
believe it's a boy) was 18 months
old when this picture was taken in
1894 in Carthage, Mo. That's all I
know.
I hope Lex had loving parents and
later a loving wife and children of
his own and led a good life free of
disease and pain. I hope some of
his dreams came true and that he
lived a long time.
Though I love owning this photo, I
wish Lex's family hadn't abandoned
it. They could have given it so much
more: a history and an honored
place on a mantlepiece. They could
tell stories, give descendants a real
sense of who this child was and the
man he came to be and in turn his
children and grandchildren and
great-grandchildren would have
learned much about their heritage,
and themselves.
But instead it came to me. So I
look at it from time to time and that
small gift — being thought of kindly
by a stranger — is all he has now.
