Judge Borman recalled the obstacles
he faced coming out of law school in
1961, when law firms would advertise
for a "Christian" law school graduate.
"It's a different world now You're
invited into all the different charities
and you participate. You're invited
into all the different law firms and you
participate," he said. "You have more
choices. A lot of young people now
will leave Judaism because they have
other choices, they don't have to be
there. Do a lot for your people
because it shows commitment to your
family and [there is a large] feel-good
factor."
Judge White, a New Yorker who
came to Detroit in 1978, discussed
cultural affiliation with Judaism. She is
active in the American Jewish Com-
mittee.
"I find that the balance between the
Jewish community and non-Jewish
community is very important," White
said. "It rounds out your life."
Ron Klein, a co-chair of the event,
said the judges were chosen because
they are role models for community
involvement.
Howard Collens, an attorney with
UAW legal services, suggested that
young adults today may not face
closed doors because of the
ground-breaking these
three judges have done
over the years.
According to Mazor-
Posner, the young adult
participants were selected
on the basis of involve-
ment or potential for
involvement with the Fed-
eration.
