IINT ith the flood of on-line
news services available,
keeping up to date on
Israel's religious conflicts
has become easy for the average Israel-
watcher in the United States. But fig-
'–•ing out what it all means is more
confusing than ever.
In the course of a week, Israel's
Ne'eman Commission announced a
plan calling for recognition of conver-
sions performed by Reform and
Conservative rabbis as long as they are
performed according to Orthodox
specifications. Another commission,
headed by Jewish Agency Chairman
\- -;kvraham Burg, presented a technical
plan to the Knesset that allows all con-
verts to become Israeli citizens as long
as the details of their conversion are
noted in a national registry.
Then a group of Orthodox rabbis
— in open letters — urged Israel's
Chief Rabbinate to reject the Ne'eman
Commission's recommendations and
avoid all-negotiations with Reform
,---and Conservative leaders.
Detroit leaders from all streams of
Judaism say they are struggling to fol-
low the controversy.
"I'm pleased that there has been
some progress and that these issues
have at least begun to be addressed,"
said Rabbi Joseph Klein of Temple
Emanu-El. "But I'm concerned that
