DThe Importance
Of Unity

Thank you for publishing the fasci-
nating article by Heidi Fischgrund
("Flourishing In The Ashes" Jan. 16)
on the UJA Young Leadership visit to
the Cuban Jewish community.
We talk a great deal about the
commonality and connection of all
Jews, but only when there is a crisis or
when we learn of the various and
often desperate communities do we
truly grasp how important it is that
we are unified.

Unity Through
;Neighborhood Project
We are writing in response to the Jan.

9 editor's notebook ("Tolerance In
Israel Has An Effect At Home").
You state that too infrequently Jews
come together without identifying
themselves as members of different
denominations. You add that while
small efforts to build understanding
\iare being made, " ... nothing is done
/- routinely to bring about a continuing
dialogue between Jewish religious
leaders or laymen."
The Neighborhood Project of the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, over the last year, has
brought together representatives of
our three Oak Park neighborhood
synagogues for that very purpose.
\-Members of Temple Emanu-El,
Congregation Beth Shalom and
Young Israel of Oak Park have
engaged in mitzvah projects to pro-
mote dialogue and interaction
between the three different groups.
The group continues to meet and
plans are under way to expand the
format. We come together to focus on
what we share rather than on that
which sets us apart.
