Americans spend $3.24 billion a y6.r on herbal medicines, and the average annual outlay is $54. High-income, urban baby boomers are the biggest spender's, with residents of Western states spending the most. "These results fly in the face of a popular misconception that herbal _ remedies are used by aging hippies or found in Granny's kitchen cupboard," says Prevention's research director, Ed Slaughter. Most adults believe herbal remedies are as safe or safer than non-herbal medication, and more than half say herbal treatments are more effective. Herbal cold remedies are the most popular, followed by natural medica- tion for burns, headaches, allergies, rashes and premenstrual syndrome. Varro S. Tyler, Ph.D., Sc.D., dean emeritus of the Purdue University School of Pharmacy and Pharmacal Sciences, believes plant-based treat- ments can be very effective, but says the herbal drug industry should be regulated to protect consumers. UFO Sightings Programs like "X-Files" and "Unsolved Mysteries" aside, people are easily influenced by what they see about UFOs on television. "The credibility of the source is important when it comes to how peo- ple evaluate the information they hear," says Glenn Sparks, professor of communication at Purdue University. When uncritical accounts of UFOs are aired on television news programs — a source most viewers consider credible — belief in flying saucers soars. Sparks believes one-sided news stories about UFOs sway viewers because up to half of all adults believe in the existence -of UFOs. "Another third are uncertain about their existence and are therefore likely to be impacted by information from sources they perceive to be credible," he adds.
