Call (248)354-5959 Posen was part of Wolverine's cycling program for about 20 years before he began speedskating, as part of his cross- training program. "I finally decided I was getting bored with riding the wind trainer in the win- ter, all the time. Speedskating is a good substitute," he said. Solway's former interest in figure skating evolved into a desire to speed- skate late last year. She enjoys going to Wolverine's weekly speedskating sessions and "meeting new people and doing such an unusual sport. When I tell peo- ple about it they say, 'Wow!'" Solway says most people think of speedskating as something to watch during the Olympics. "They don't know that they could do it, too, at the Detroit Skating Club." For the Hertzes, speedskating iss-a family activity. Steve Hertz was one of those who watched speedskating on TV. But when he joined Wolverine about four years ago, he learned about their speedskating program. He soon joined the program, which features Sunday afternoon practice and lessons. He then convinced daughter Jenna, now 9, to join him. "Part of the draw for Jenna was the fact that it was like a daddy-daughter day," says mom Barbara Hertz. But soon she and the couple's other daugh- ter, Lauren, now 7, turned it into a family day. "It's something an entire family can do," says Steve Hertz. "There are skaters on the ice from 4 years old to 74 years old. Our coach (John Camilli of Royal Oak) is a two-time current national champion for master men (35 and up). "You can all share the ice and get workouts. You work on different things, but you can all be together at the same time. Virtually anybody can participate, regardless of your ability. We teach first- timers who've never put skates on before." Hertz calls speedskating "an art form on ice. It isn't a muscle sport so much as it is a technique sport." Danielle David, a friend of Sklar's, enjoyed speedskating right from the start after coming out to practice last year. "I'm doing it just for fun," David said. "It's exciting—going fast and being competitive. There's not too much pres- sure put on you. You can be as competi- tive as you want." The Super Skate III competition runs from 12:30-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, and from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8. Sponsors expect more than 100 competitors, mostly from the Midwest and Ontario. Entrants will be seeded according to age and ability and will compete in four races on a 111.11-meter oval. The event is sanc- tioned by the Amateur Speedskating Union and the Michigan Speedskating Association. Cl For information on Super Skate III, call the Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield Township, (248) 332- 7133. The address is 888 Denison Court, north of Square Lake Road, west off Franklin Road. The Cadillac Pro Indoor USTA (United States Tennis Association) Challenger will be coming to West Bloomfield this Monday, Feb. 2, through Saturday. Headlining the event will be Eyal Erlich and Eyal Ran, two of Israel's top pro players. Erlich, 21, is ranked 178 in the world by the Association of Tennis Profesisonals (ATP). His progress has been slowed recently due to his com- mitment to the Israeli army, which ends this October. He then plans to play on the tour on a more regular basis. Ran, 27, is ranked 194, and has been on the ATP since 1992. He also has played on the Israeli Davis Cup team since 1992. The field will feature 14 players from the U.S., as well as nine other countries. For schedule and ticket informa- tion, contact the Sports Club at (248) 626-9880.
