18th-century houses. There's a crum-
bling 1762 Bible in Hebrew and
Spanish and 18th-century ketubot
(marriage certificates).
Other unusual items include large
circumcision chairs and a hand-
embroidered "blessing dress" from the
original Maduro family who settled
here. The synagogue's original mikvah
is in the courtyard.
Many of the successful 18th- and
19th-century Willemstad Jewish mer-
chants lived in Scharloo, a walk across
the Waagat [a canal] near the Central
Market. Here, colorful buildings in
melon and deep green blend tropical
Dutch architecture with classic Greek
and South American "vermacelli style."
Many have been restored and now har-
bor government and business offices.
Outside of town, reminders of the
early Jews remain in two cemeteries.
The cemetery of Bet Chayim
Blenheim, the first synagogue estab-
lished in 1659 on Blenheim Plantation
in "Joode Quarter," remains in a wire-
fenced section near the Shell oil refin-
ery. The oldest discernible tombstone
dates from 1659.
A newer cemetery is located on Berg
Altena in the affluent Mahaai section
-- named for makhaye — where many
Jews live today. It was started in the
early 20th century, and is unusual as
the nation's only site of below-ground
burials, covered with elaborate marble
monuments bearing urns on posts.
Many other attractions draw families
and others interested in nature. The
Curacao Sea Aquarium, greatly expand-
ed, is lighter and brighter than previ-
ously. Below ground, visitors descend
into the 300,000-year-old Hato Caves,
opened to the public only six years ago.
Early Indian occupants left reminders
of their civilization in authentic draw-
ings on the exteriors. Inside, among the
varied formations, runaway slaves hid
out; it's rumored that black magic was
practiced here later.
At Mount Christoffel National
Park, hikers may climb the 1,300-foot-
high mountain on their own or by
guided tour and see orchids blooming
during the rainy season along with the
cactus.
A newer attraction is the Ostrich
Farm, established in 1991. The owner,
from Zimbabwe, only opened it to
tourists two years ago. Some 500 birds
of all ages live here, where they're
raised for zoos and to provide meat for
restaurants.
The newer attractions, added to the
longtime Jewish monuments, are suffi-
cient to warrant a delightful visit.
