Winter Walden Ski It Snowboarding Club for Children Jewish issues," said Elliot Sorkin, director of administration for the Fresh Air Society. "We want partici- pants to feel comfortable in a Jewish setting." Elderhostel, a non-profit organiza- tion that provides learning opportu- nities for people age 55 and older, consists of a network of 2,000 educa- tional and cultural institutions. Hosts include colleges, conference centers, state and national parks, museums, theaters and environmen- tal/outdoor education centers. Programs are based throughout the U.S. and Canada and in more than 70 countries overseas. Judaism, instruction, travel and fun. "We try to get referrals of the finest instructors, and they pick the topics," Sorkin said. "We've found that the response to a particular sub- ject depends more on the instructor than the subject. "People who are open intellectually would enjoy our sessions. It does not matter what level of education partic- ipants ultimately reached." Days at Fresh Air's Elderhostel are very routine: breakfast, two sessions, lunch, one session, free time, dinner and an evening program. Among the draws this year, Cantor Steve Dubov will entertain with music from Broadway and pianist Bob Milne will present a history of ragtime. Across the country, other Elderhostel centers offer programs of Jewish content. Here are some exam- ples: * The North Bay Jewish Community Center near San Francisco will feature "Jerusalem: Sacred City, Holy Wars," "Judaism and the Environment: The Torah in Action" and "Jewish Wine, Men & Women and Song." * The Jewish Retreat Center at Camp Isabella Freedman II in the Berkshire Mountains of Delaware has scheduled "Sing a New Song Unto God — A Celebration of Jewish Music," "Caring for Creation: Learning to See the Environment Through Jewish Eyes," "The Films of Woody Allen: A Body of Work of Unique Aesthetic and Comic Vision," "A Taste of Talmud" and "From Borscht to Sauerkraut: The Biology and History of Jewish Foods." * The Academy of Jewish Studies/Palm Beach includes "Am Yisrael Chai: A Celebration of Israel's 50th," "The Best of Jewish Folklore: Tales from the Talmud," "Exploring the 'Why' of History: The Art and Science of Psychohistory" and "Contemporary Jewish Men and Their New Ideas." For those who want to combine Jewish Elderhostel experiences with other travel, there also are programs in Maryland, Massachusetts and New York among many other locales. "Elderhostel encourages people to attend sessions outside their immedi- ate area," Sorkin said. "About 10 per- cent of our participants return to our , programs." Anita and Kenneth Volk are among those who have returned to Fresh Air. "We liked the introduction of new ideas and new thoughts," Anita Volk said. "We liked the instructors and getting involved with the group's reaction." Jerry and Sara Schoem have only attended once, but they are planning to return. "We learned from all our instruc- tors, and we liked the congeniality," Jerry Schoem said. "We've kept in touch with some of the people from other states." Schoem also was impressed with the accommodations for the handi- capped. He noted how a woman was able to participate despite being in a wheelchair. "We've had people meet old friends they hadn't seen in 30 years," Sorkin said. "And we've had non- Jewish people attend with the idea or learning more about Judaism. It's sur- prising how many have said they felt like teen-agers again." * Professional instructions * Classes for all skill levels - beginner to expert * Special program for the younger skiers (ages 6-9) * Small classes * Adult classes too! * Charter buses Saturday & Sunday (248) 855-1075 Teaching Kids to Ski is Our Business ski club Celebrating our 23rd Season!
