Applications are being taken for $500
Oakland Century B'nai B'rith scholar-
ships. To apply, submit a grade tran-
script (no certification necessary)
together with a typewritten memoran-
dum in letter form demonstrating
details of compliance with each of the
following requirements.
The applicant must be: a Jewish
student from the metropolitan Detroit
area who is now attending a college or
university with at least one full year of
credits toward a degree; who has supe-
rior scholarship; who demonstrates a
need for financial assistance; who
shows leadership qualities for the bene-
fit of the Jewish community; whose
campus activities show established
roots in metropolitan Detroit.
Applications are due April 20. Mail

Has Screening

The Grosse Pointe Jewish Council will
host a screening of Harvey Ovshinsky's
award-winning documentary film
short, Off the Wall: A Creative journey,
8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the
Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church.
Ovshinsky will lead a discussion about
the film after the screening.
Off the Wall tells the story of an
unusual collaboration between award-
winning film producer-director Harvey
Ovshinsky and his close friend,
Michigan artist Arthur Schneider.

The organizing committee for the
1998 JCC Maccabi Games will hold
informational coffees 10 a.m. Sunday,
Jan. 25, at the Maple/Drake JCC and
10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at the JPM.
A member of the organizing com-
mittee will speak briefly about this
Jewish event and possibilities for par-
ticipating as host families and volun-
teers. Bagels and coffee will be served.

Kol Ami
Bowling Party

Temple Kol Ami families and friends
will meet for an:afternoon of bowling
and pizza, noon-2:30 p.m. Sunday,
Jan. 25, at Langan's Bowling Alley,
32905 Northwestern Highway,
Farmington Hills. The fee is $10 per
person.
For every strike scored in.the bowl-
ing, one dollar will be donated to
MAZON (A Jewish Response to
Hunger), up to $100.

Offer Variety

Winter Tuesdays at the Maple/Drake
JCC will offer a selection of adult
learning at various times.
The JCC and Kotel Moshe will pre-
sent Rabbi Rod Glowgower teaching
"Rabbinic Sources, Visionary
Perspectives," a course in Talmud, on
Tuesdays at 10:30- noon, beginning
Feb. 10. The JCC and the Ecumenical
Institute for Jewish-Christian Studies
will present Rabbi Amy Brodsky,
noon- 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning
Feb. 24, for a lunch and learn focusing
on "A Jewish Look at the Messianic
Concept." "Pirkei Avot: Perspectives in
Jewish Ethics" will be taught by Rabbi
Abraham Jacobowitz of Machon
L'Torah at 7:30-8:45 p.m. Course
lengths and tuition vary. For details,

The Midrasha's Total Beginner
Conversational Hebrew Course, taught
by Tziona Ragowsky, will meet
Wednesday, 7:30-9:30 p.m. beginning
Feb. 4, at Maple/Drake, room 130.
Additional levels of Hebrew are offered

by the Midrasha at its Twelve-Mile
building. For details or to register for
any Midrasha Hebrew course, call the

The JCC celebrates Israel's Oth
birthday in January with the opening
of parallel photo exhibits. While the
Janice Charach Epstein Museum
Gallery will feature "The Birth of
Israel," a photographic look at Israel as
it became an independent Jewish state
— "Israel Through the Eyes of
Detroiters" will be on display through
Jan. 28. It then moves to the Jimmy
Prentis Morris JCC building in Oak
Park for the month of February.
The museum gallery hours for "The
Birth of Israel," are Mon.-Wed., 11
a.m.-6 p.m.; Thurs. 11 a.m.-8 p.m.,
Sun., 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission for
both exhibits is free. Group education
visits are available.

JPM JCC
Events Calendar

Cafe Europa will be held 12:45 p.m.
Monday Jan. 26, at the Jewish
Community Center in Oak park. This
monthly program is sponsored by
Sinai Hospital and the Jewish
Community Center for Holocaust sur-
vivors of Detroit. The afternoon is
free; donations will be accepted.
The Jewish Community Center in
Oak Park will host a concert with
Michael Krieger, 1 p.m. Thursday, Ja m
29. There is a nominal fee for non-
members.
The Center Forum meets every
Thursday at 10:30 .a.m. David Weiner
facilitates this current events group for
seniors dealing with topics on local,
national and international issues.
There is no charge.

Educational
Symposium

The Discovery Seminar will come to
the Detroit area, sponsored by
Mortgage World Wide Financial. The
educational symposium on the Jewish
faith will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb.
8, at the Tam O'Shanter Country
Club in West Bloomfield. The presen-
tation includes state-of-the-art, corn-
puter-generated technology to examine
ancient texts and scriptures.
Tickets are available by calling (248)
932-4088. Prices are $25 in advance
and $35 at the door. Group rates are
available.
