But nowhere is there so much
resentment as in the Army. Most of it,
to be sure, is unreported, but some-
times there is a leak, as occurred after
General Amiaz Sagis, Commander of
the Army's Technology and Logistics
Branch, spoke about the matter to a
group of his fellow officers.
According to Carmela Menashe,
military correspondent of Israel Radio,
he ironically suggested that "IDF out-
posts in southern Lebanon be
renamed yeshivot so that they would
be able to receive thelfunds they
require." General Sagis also reportedly
expressed outrage at the fact that the
public was being asked to contribute
$8-million to a fund that would pro-
vide scholarships for ex-soldiers, while
yeshiva students automatically enjoyed
government scholarships (plus living
allowances).

Adding insult to injury, a recent
study reported that 60 percent of
ultra-Orthodox men are not gainfully
employed and that over half the
income of Orthodox families comes
from public funds (to which they con-
tribute very little because most are too
poor to pay taxes).
Physical attacks by one group
against the other are fortunately still
rare, but verbal abuse is growing daily.
Secularists routinely call the Orthodox
parasites or even bloodsuckers. Not to
be outdone, spokesmen for the hared-
im speak of their adversaries as ene-
mies of Israel and refer to
Conservative and Reform rabbis as
priests.
There is no easy solution to this
problem. For while it is possible for
the secularists and the Orthodox to
live in separate neighborhoods, as
most desire, they remain residents of
the same tiny country. And unless
they can learn to respect one another,
life in that country may become
unbearable for both. El
