Ruth Fuller puts together a newly-bound
book that will be sent back to the State
of Michigan Library for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped in Lansing.

they need to go, including the State of
Michigan Library for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped in Lansing
and the Jewish Braille Institute. The
state library mostly needs novels and
how-to books bound.
Contributions and Beth El
Sisterhood funding cover any costs
associated with the binding effort.
Ilene Sawyer, who is visually
impaired, co-chairs the effort with

Salle. The only visually impaired par-
ticipant, Sawyer is responsible for
checking the Braille to make sure the
pages are in the right order and that
there are no mistakes.
'After we bind the book, each book
needs a label in print and a label in
Braille, so somebody has to write the
Braille label," says Sawyer. She writes
the labels. "And when a book comes
in, you have to make sure it's collated
correctly. I'm the one who does all the
reading."
Some books in need of repair that
were sent by the state library arrived
with pages missing, Sawyer says. The
only Braillest in the group, she put
them back together correctly.
"The sighted people number the
pages in pencil before they put it
together to make sure they're collated
correctly. Sometimes they put a page
upside down, backwards, then we have
to open the book and start it over. I'm
the only one who can double check."
Salle, who is 58 years old, says the
group encourages younger volunteers
to participate.

Due to the
incredible response, the sale has
been extended through January 31!
