in the kinds of families they raised
when they got married.
I would strongly urge that the plan-
ners of the teen missions give serious
consideration to conducting some of
their activities in a Hebrew context.
The experience gained from such
efforts might even pave the way for
what could be a revolution (for the
good) in Jewish education.

My thanks to Julie Edgar for writing
such a beautiful description of Phil
Jacobs, who has left Detroit for
Baltimore. ("Farewell, Good Friend"
Jan. 2)
Honesty, sincerity, devotion, love,
kindness, graciousness and under-
standing all describe Phil Jacobs. To
have known him while he was in the
Detroit area was truly a blessing.
May he continue to spread his
mentschlickeit in all his future endeav-
ors.

Any student of law, public policy or
religion knows the importance
Americans placE on religious freedom.
The First Amendment's religion
clauses — the No-Establishment
Clause and the Free Exercise Clause
— have enabled diverse religious faiths
to flourish in this country in a fashion
unparalleled in history.
A Michigan State RFRA (Religious
Freedom Restoration Act) is needed to
restore the protection of religious free-
doms struck down by case court deci-
sions in Smith and in another case
known as Boerne.
Absent state legislation, local govern-
ment will have the authority to enforce
general prohibitions on the serving of
wine to minors so as to ban the use of
sacramental wine by Christian and
Jewish minors, a school hat ban so as to
prohibit Jewish or Muslim students
from wearing religious head coverings
or truancy laws so as to forbid public
school students from taking time off for
religious holidays.
The American Jewish Committee

urges Michigan to enact a state RFRA
as broad in their protection of reli-
gious free exercise as the original fed-
eral law.

Was Wrong

I refer to the editor's notebook by Neil
Rubin, "A Jew In The Street And In
The Home" (Jan. 16).
I have no quarrel with Mr. Rubin's
ruminations about the subject matter;
what I take issue with is the author's
erroneous attribution.
The phrase, or motto, "to be a man
in the street and a Jew in the home,"
was not coined by the German Jewish
philosopher Moses Mendelssohn "a
little more than two centuries ago,"
but by the Russian Jewish poet Judah
Leib Gordon, a little less than one
century ago.
The full text of Judah Leib
Gordon's controversial slogan was :
"Be a man when you go out and a Jew
in your tent, a brother to your coun-
trymen and a servant to your king."
Moreover, Jewish historians never
identified Moses Mendelssohn as "one
of the more controversial figures in
Jewish history," but a respected sym-
bol of the emancipation.
Judah Leib Gordon was known as
the poet laureate of the Russian
Haskalah movement.

VIEWS

ISRAEL, from page 35

vinced that they might support Israel
for their self-interest and selfish rea-
sons.
Ultimately, Israel is, one might well
argue, the last refuge for Jews should
they need one. Jews remain at risk in
many countries around the world. Let
us not forget that it was but a few
years ago that Israel absorbed tens of
thousands of Jews from the Soviet
Union.
Let us hope that those withholding
their financial assistance to Israel never
rue the day they made their decisions
because of the consequences for Jews
needing refuge or, for that matter, for
themselves.
