able to fight and who don't have the
benefit of skilled pain management
and comfort care will be subjected to
euthanasia."
Terminally ill patients could com-
mit suicide for the wrong reasons,
Hentoff wrote in a recent Washington
Post column entitled "Duty to Die".
"As a consequence of the current
national debate on physician-assisted
suicide, its opponents have predicted
that if assisted suicide is legalized, peo-
ple whose illnesses are costly and long
term may be convinced that they have
a duty to die. Feeling guilty because of
the burden they have become to their
families, they — with suicide now
approved by society — may ask their
doctors to help them to die."
Hentoff warns that if unchecked,
euthanasia could endanger us all:
"You, your family, your spouse, your
children. It will lead to the death of
you and your family."
When an audience member asked if
his pro-life stance enhanced his reli-
gious life, Hentoff answered, "No. I
was born Jewish, and I am truly an
atheist." Then he added, "Almost
every time I speak to a pro-life group,
the next week I get two or three Bibles
in the mail. As my friend, Cardinal
O'Connor, said, 'We're delighted that
Nat is not a member of the Church.
We have enough trouble as it is.'"

Hentoff fears the
\ right to privacy
will extend to the
right to die.

Aside from his column in the
Village Voice, Hentoff writes a column
for the Washington Post that is syndi-
cated in 250 newspapers worldwide.
He has written about civil liberties,
civil rights and criminal justice for the
New York Times, the New Republic,
and The Atlantic. He is the author of
many books, including Free Speech for
Me - But Not for Thee: How the
American Left and Right Relentlessly
Censor Each Other.
The American Bar Association gave
;– )Hentoff its silver gavel award for cov-
erage of the criminal justice system
and the People of the American Way
presented him with its First
Amendment Award.
Hentoff also is a leading expert on
jazz music.
