' HANGING AROUND

Modern Jewish sights in Vienna —
a rabbi meeting with a cardinal, the
kosher butcher on Singerstrasse and
the lighting of Sabbath candles —
make up the current exhibit at the
Spertus Museum in Chicago.
The traveling display, "Vienna
Today," showcases 60 photographs
taken in 1994 by Harry Weber, a
Al Vienna native. The works, originally
shown at the Jewish Museum, Vienna,
were featured at the Cannon Rotunda
on Capitol Hill before stopping in
Chicago.
"Reflecting and trying to under-
stand why people do what they do or
finding out why they do not do a cer-
tain thing" is the way Weber describes
his work, according to the catalogue
that accompanies the exhibit.
In approaching the complexities of
Vienna, he has placed his trust in peo-
ple as they see themselves as Jews in
very personal ways. Looking for those
images, Weber spent 12 months in his
home city.
The exhibition does not attempt to
offer a complete and objective impres-
• sion of modern Jewish lifestyles. The
• pictures form a portrait of an often
repressed, but nonetheless vital, urban
reality.

to Palestine in 1938 and served as a
soldier in the Jewish Brigade until
1946.
Since his return to Austria, he has
worked as a photographer for Stern
magazine, the Salzburg Festival and
the Theater in der Josefstadt.
His work has been published and
shown internationally, and he is a
recipient of the Dr. Karl Renner
Award for Journalism.

Although Weber does not consider
himself a religious person, the life of
the Orthodox community in the area
known as Leopoldstadt interests him
deeply. According to the catalogue,
Weber celebrates the revival of Jewish
life there.
