dam Bernard can identi
with the character he plays
in the Grosse Pointe
Theatre production of
Sabrina Fair, which runs through Jan.
31 at the Grosse Pointe War
Memorial. Like Linus Larrabee, a
strong businessman who falls in love
with his chauffeur's daughter, Bernard
tends to be cynical and has played out
/- the role of older brother while grow-
ing up in New Jersey.
"I like doing comedy, and I find that
acting lets me learn a little about myself
and how I interact with other people,"
said Bernard, 33, who does customer
research, product planning and com-
petitive analysis for General Motors.
"I especially like this part because
the character changes."
Bernard enjoyed working in theater
throughout high school and as a col-
lege student at Massachusetts Institute
of Technology and Harvard. In those
years, he stayed behind the scenes.
Although Bernard has been living
in Michigan for 12 years, he waited
five years before acting on his interest
in community theater. Besides being
associated with the Grosse Pointe
Theatre, he works with Stagecrafters
and Avon Players.
Bernard's first role was in George M
for Stagecrafters. He has since had parts
in Guys and Dolls, A Few Good Men, A
Chorus Line and Anything Goes.
"We're keeping the play set in the
'50s," Bernard said about the romantic
comedy that was turned into two fea-
ture films. The production is part of
the company's 50th anniversary sea-
son. Bernard has enhanced his danc-
ing skills by being part of a country
line dance team in Pontiac.
"I think it would be fun to try
directing, and I'm looking for that
opportunity," Bernard said.
Sabrina Fair will be performed 8
p.m. Jan. 23-24 and Jan. 28-31
and at 2 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Grosse
Pointe War Memorial, 32
Lakeshore Dr., Grosse Pointe
Farms. $13. (313) 881-4004.
