"I think the experience I got trad-
ing those jokes prepared me for writ-
ing dialogue as much as anything else
I ever did. I can still use some of the
lines I came up with back then."
While Zuckerman was growing up
in Detroit, he wrote for the Bagley
Banner, Post Script and Mumford Mer-
cury. After school, he studied at Tem-
ple Israel, where he celebrated his bar
mitzvah and confirmation.
Zuckerman got away from religious
activities until the last several years,
when marriage and the birth of two
daughters changed his priorities.
Zuckerman and Liza Levine, a for-
mer news and documentary producer,
want a religious orientation for Molly
Jane, 4, and Margo, 1.
"My wife is half Jewish, and she
was raised without any religion," said
Zuckerman, whose Michigan relatives
also have moved out of the state.
"Liza feels she missed something,
and we've become involved with a
Conservative congregation in Califor-
nia."
Dividing his time between family
and work, Zuckerman looks back on
two professional projects that had the
deepest meaning for him — the book
about the absurdity of winning a
nuclear war and a "Law and Order"
episode about a 1960s radical arrested
long after settling down as a wife and
mother.
While watching a recent softball
game in California, Zuckerman noticed
a man wearing a Tigers T-shirt and
started a conversation. He thought the
person might be someone he knew.
As it turned out, the man, Ron
Lux, had lived in the same Detroit
neighborhood as Zuckerman and also
was a writer. Zuckerman hired him to
do a script for "The Players."
"I still write a very occasional mag-
azine article," Zuckerman said.
"When I retire from TV, I'll probably
go back to writing articles and books.
It will be a great luxury to be able to
do that with the security I've amassed
working in television."
